Maddi Lingard talks about “Maddi full in love with Thomas under the moon”

My name is Maddi with an ‘I’

My work is called ‘Maddi full in love with Thomas under the moon’.

It’s a big work, and long. Which I really like it. The work is about being full in love with Thomas. Which I can’t think about him because I am so in love with him. We are under the moon.

I’ve been thinking about the moon. It is calm, magical, powerful and bright. These are words that are important to me.

I used pencil first then I do an outline of black sharpie, then felt tips. I use paints on the sky, and then final little moons go on last bit with collage. I used posca pen for the stars.

I love art and my sister she loves an art too.

I feel relaxed.

I like the word inspire and I like an inspire people with their work by being kind and showing a people what I think of. My head full of a good ideas.

I like to see my boyfriend again in the long piece of work. I am sharing my memories with new people.

When people like my work, it touches my feelings.

It makes me feel close to my family. I want to show my art to the world

I like quiet, I don’t like when people make noise. When I see people feel upset, I feel upset too. I like to spend time with my family. My mum and sister and my cousins. And my boyfriend Thomas. I am an artist and a sister and I want to make art to show people my story

I want to be famous as an artist. I want people to see me change the world.

Maddi full in love with Thomas under the Moon by Maddi Lingard 2026. Pens, Acrylics and Collage on Paper 62cm high by 200 cm wide

Maddi full in love with Thomas under the Moon is a brightly coloured work showing the two figures of Maddi and Thomas at different times in their relationship. The long horizontal work is separated into panels, dating in order from left to right, with each one showing the couple together under the moon.  The people and objects are outlined in black marker and these outlined blocks are coloured in with pens. Acrylic paint is used for the skies and the waves in the first panel and collaged watercolour for the moons across the artwork. The blocks of bright colour and side by side panels telling a story give the feeling of a comic book.

In the first panel on the left, Maddi and Thomas lie side by side on the seashore, resting on a brown patch of sand and staring out at us. Thomas on the left has short brown hair, blue eyes and a little patch of beard on his chin, just below his smiling mouth. He is shirtless and his skin is a peachy-cream colour. His arms are wrapped around Maddi, sitting with her head resting on her two hands, with red varnished fingernails. She too has peachy-cream coloured skin, with long brown hair and big eyes and eyelashes. Her heart-shaped mouth is lined with red lippy. In this panel, Maddi has a mermaid’s tail raised high up behind her ending in a flipper. Behind them is a blue and turquoise sea under a pale blue sky, filled with white stars and a pale yellow full moon. Written at the top of this panel are the words: Warrington 8th of March in 2020.

The next panel to the right, panel 2, shows Maddi and Thomas sat at a table, looking out towards us. Thomas wears maroon coloured button-up shirt trimmed in blue over a pale violet t-shirt. Maddie sits next to him, in a pale violet top, resting her chin on one hand. Her long light brown hair has curls drawn into it. On the table before them is a salt shaker, a spoon, and a jug and two glasses filled with blue liquid. In the background there’s a skyscraper set against a dark blue sky, covered with white stars and a full yellow moon. In the top right of the panel, words written in black read: 21st of March 2020.

The next panel shows Maddi and Thomas outdoors on a summer night. They both look out in our direction. Maddi, on the left, has her brown hair piled high on top of her head. She’s wearing a hot pink sleeveless top and gold bangles on her wrists. In her lap, she cradles a black and tan dog, with a small face and fluffy ears. Next to her, Thomas, in a purply brown t-shirt and black shorts, also holds a dog in his arms, this one brown and furry. Rising between them is a big heart-shaped red balloon with sparkly words printed on it reading: Happy birthday my love. Behind them the blue sky is speckled with white stars, a pale yellow full moon. In the upper right, words written in black marker read: In a July at 2021.

The fourth panel shows Maddi and Thomas dressed elegantly and looking out at us. Maddie wears red eye shadow and her long, light brown hair is brushed to one side. She wears a loose red top over a white t-shirt. Thomas stands behind her wearing a long, loose grey coat. They stand in front of a blue sky covered in white stars under a pale yellow crescent moon. At the top, black lettering reads: Salford Quays 22nd of January 2022 P.S. ready for a show.

The next panel shows Thomas and Maddi standing on a green lawn, dressed smartly and looking out at us. Thomas on the left wears a blue-and-pink patterned short-sleeved shirt with black squiggles and long black trousers. Beside him, curly haired Maddie wears a spaghetti strap, blue, knee-length dress, with a lavender coloured belt. She wears a wristwatch and an ankle bracelet and her toenails are painted blue. The pale sky behind them is filled with white stars and a turquoise coloured moon. The writing at the top right reads: 21st of October 2022.

The next panel shows Maddie and Thomas standing in profile facing each other, holding hands, on a patch of green lawn. Their mouths are open, as though speaking or singing to each other. Maddie wears a sleeveless pink top, a long black skirt, and black ballet-style shoes. Her straightened hair falls down to her elbows. Facing her, Thomas wears a dark blue jacket, belted at the waist, black trousers and black shoes. Behind them, the deep blue sky is covered with white stars and a full moon. At the top, words written in black read: Macclesfield – Bollington 12th of November 2022.

The next panel shows the couple standing side by side, facing us, in front of a Christmas tree and another oak-like tree. Maddi on the left, with shoulder length wavy hair, wears a light brown puffer coat over a red-and-orange striped top, and a gold coloured scarf. Beside her, Thomas has a moustache and full beard. His maroon-and-pink coloured shirt peaks out of a bulky black coat. They stand in front of a Christmas tree decorated with ornaments on the left, with a yellow star on top, and a larger tree on the right. Behind them the light blue sky is filled white stars and a crescent moon. Black lettering at the top reads: Wilmslow 16th of November 2024.

The final panel on the far right shows the couple snogging in front of the Venture Arts Studio. Thomas on the left wears a bright red t-shirt and black trousers. His arms are wrapped around Maddie while kissing her. Maddie, with curly hair to her shoulders, wears a flower-patterned skirt with a light brown bomber jacket. She has a small beige rucksack strung over her shoulder and carries a blue handbag with rainbow decorations on its front. Her face and lips are pressed up against Thomas’ and she holds one arm up to touch his neck. The couple are stood in front of a green wall with a sign on it reading: Venture Arts Studio, Room 53. Above them the blue sky holds two big white stars and a giant heart-shaped moon. At the top, words written in black read: 13 of January in a 2026 pack run.
