This is my favourite artwork I’ve made because it’s got a lovely blue over gold with a dark background. I’ve also managed to keep the bees in and keep them in their little blue honeycomb.
Bees have a lot of mystical qualities to me, as I think they’re very magical. The way they help the environment by making plants grow, and they’re very important to the environment, and if we didn’t have them, there’d be no food.
I remember reading a quote from Aristotle about bees being holy, and that’s often what I think about when I make my artwork. And they have a lot of mystical significance, the way that they dance and move around and communicate using their dancing.
I visited Hampton Court Palace recently, and when I did, we went into the chapel, and the ceiling was covered with a beautiful blue, and it looked like a galaxy, which I tried to put in this painting.
One thing that I’ve always thought has been to my detriment is that I move from one thing to another very quickly. I’ve got lots of ideas, and I tend to like to work quickly and have my results in front of me quickly.
I think I compare myself to bees in that way and the way bees move around different flowers and work very hard sometimes just for a little bit of result.
A lot of the gelli printing is trial and error. Everything comes out differently, and it’s hard to predict what will happen. Even the pressure that you apply, the times that you wait for the ink to dry, or even just how warm your room is, it can really make an effect on the print.
I think bees inspire me in this way to keep going, even in the face of hardship.

이 작품은 제가 가장 아끼는 작업이에요. 어두운 배경 위로 금색과 어우러진 푸른 빛이 참 아름답거든요. 작은 푸른색 벌집 속에 벌들도 잘 담아냈고요.
제게 벌들은 아주 신비롭고 마법 같은 존재예요. 식물을 자라게 해서 환경을 돕는 방식도 그렇고, 우리 생태계에서 정말 중요한 역할을 해요. 벌들이 없다면 우리가 먹을 음식도 없을 거예요.
아리스토텔레스가 벌을 ‘신성한 존재’라고 했던 구절을 읽은 적이 있는데, 작업을 할 때 종종 그 말을 떠올리곤 해요. 벌들이 춤으로 소통하고 움직이는 모습은 정말 신비로운 의미를 담고 있거든요.
얼마 전 햄프턴 코트 궁전에 방문했을 때 예배당에 들어간 적이 있는데, 천장이 마치 은하수처럼 아름다운 푸른색으로 덮여 있었어요. 그 느낌을 이번 그림에 담아보려 노력했어요.
제가 항상 스스로 단점이라고 생각했던 점은 제가 한 가지 일에서 다른 일로 매우 빼르게 옮겨다닌다는 거였어요. 아이디어가 워낙 많다 보니 빨리 작업하고 결과물을 눈앞에서 바로 확인하고 싶어 하거든요.
벌들이 여러 꽃을 분주히 오가며 때로는 아주 작은 결실을 위해 열심히 일하는 그 모습에서 제가 벌과 닮았다는 생각을 해요.
젤리 프린팅(gelli printing) 작업은 시행착오의 연속이에요. 매번 다른 결과가 나오고, 어떤 일이 벌어질지 예측하기 어렵죠. 누르는 압력이나 잉크가 마르기를 기다리는 시간, 심지어 작업실의 온도조차 판화에 큰 영향을 미칠 수 있어요.
하지만 어려움이 닥치더라도 계속해서 나아가도록 벌들은 저에게 영감을 줍니다.
