Thompson: Right, this is the painting, the large scale painting that I've done of people in Malaysia. And I - initially it's quite big. It's two meters by one. And I initially start off with painting the background in various colours, like your pinks, your purples, your blues, your greens. I tend to do several layers of these colours, initially, to get a feel of the atmosphere, to capture that emotion. And then I start doing lines in every direction to describe the emotions. And once I've done that, I kind of start thinking about how to add the people to it. So, what I do, is start by marking out certain areas of the picture with a fine paint brush in black, to show which person goes where and I sort of, like, piece it out. And then once I've done that, I start to colour in the people. I sort of like bring them to life. And add various colours, like to their clothes, to their face or their bodies, to give a real sense of what the atmosphere is within the painting. I tend to do different colours on the background that are very free-hand -like sometimes lines, zigzags - to describe like the chaos within the painting and to give people a sense of that chaos within the painting. And it also gives me a chance to describe my initial thoughts of crowded places and crowds and, yeah, how I see chaos.
