Some of My Favourite Artists

Posted by Abraham Koh • 4 weeks ago

A collage titled “Some of My Favourite Artists” features six artists and examples of their visual worlds. A black-and-white portrait shows Pablo Picasso wearing a flat cap; David Hockney stands in a patterned suit against a vivid green leafy backdrop; and David Schluss is shown working on a colourful painting surrounded by stylised faces. Vincent van Gogh appears in a textured self-portrait dominated by reds, blues and greens. Yayoi Kusama, wearing a bright red patterned outfit and red bob hairstyle, sits among colourful sculptures covered in her signature dots. Yip Yew Chong stands smiling in front of a detailed streetscape painting.
A slide titled “My Artworks inspired by……” compares Abraham’s artwork with a work by David Schluss. On the left, Abraham’s large abstract painting is composed of overlapping geometric and organic shapes, including fragmented faces, eyes, hearts and circular forms, painted in soft pastel shades of blue, turquoise, yellow, orange, green and pink. On the right, David Schluss’s artwork depicts a densely packed town of angular, geometric houses in warm ochre, yellow, orange, cream and black, with abstract forms floating above. The two works share a playful use of fragmented shapes, overlapping forms and geometric abstraction.
A slide shows Abraham’s artworks alongside a painting by David Hockney. On the left, Abraham’s painting depicts a dog sitting with its back to the viewer, built up with expressive, textured brushstrokes in blue, purple, green, grey and yellow. At the upper right is another of Abraham’s artworks, an abstract composition with layered and scraped marks in vivid pink, red, turquoise, green, purple and white. At the lower right is David Hockney’s painting of two brown dogs lying closely together on a pale cushion, rendered with simplified forms and broad, smooth areas of colour.
Two artworks are shown side by side. On the left, Abraham’s painting reimagines a starry night landscape with swirling, textured strokes of turquoise, blue, green, yellow and white. Glowing circular stars fill the sky above mountains, trees and colourful houses, with tall, pointed green trees dominating the foreground. On the right is Vincent van Gogh’s The Starry Night, featuring an intense blue night sky filled with swirling forms, luminous yellow stars and a crescent moon above a dark village. Both works use rhythmic, swirling marks and vivid colour to create movement across the night sky.
Two artworks are shown side by side. On the left, Abraham’s painting depicts two figures standing closely together, with their faces and clothing divided into angular, geometric sections. Soft shades of blue, green, pink, yellow, orange, grey and white contrast with a richly textured brown, red and gold background. On the right is a Pablo Picasso Cubist portrait, where the figure’s face and body are fragmented into sharp geometric planes in dark, earthy shades of brown, ochre, grey and green. Both works explore portraiture through fragmented faces, angular shapes and multiple blocks of colour.
